Doj Leaders Vowed To Resign When White House Aides Started Calling Trump Loyalist Jeff Clark The Acting Attorney General January 6 Testimony Reveals
- Clark was a loyalist who embraced former President Trump’s unfounded claims of election fraud.
Jeffrey Clark, whose home was raided this week by federal law enforcement, was referred to as the “acting attorney general” in call logs at the Trump White House, the congressional committee investigating the January 6 insurrection revealed Thursday.
Clark, an environmental lawyer, had attracted former President Donald Trump’s attention by embracing his false conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and apparent willingness to use the Department of Justice to lend those claims institutional credibility.
Clark, a former top DOJ official who served as head of its environmental division, never advanced to lead the department. But on January 3, his promotion was seen as a done deal, according to White House call logs obtained by congressional investigators.

“As far as the White House was concerned, Mr. Clark was already at the top of the Justice Department,” Rep. Adam Kinzinger said Thursday.
The plan to install Clark was thwarted only by a threat of mass resignations, according to former Acting Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue.
“They would resign en masse if the president made that change,” Donoghue said of other top DOJ officials, testifying Thursday before the January 6 committee. “All without hesitation said they would resign.”
Everyone at the meeting agreed, per Donoghue.

Federal Agents Reportedly Searched Home Of Jeffrey Clark Ex
Federal agents on Wednesday morning searched the Virginia residence of former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark, multiple news outlets reported.
Clark, a former environmental lawyer at the Justice Department, played a public role in Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election. The committee plans to examine his involvement during its hearing Thursday afternoon. The panel plans to show how Trump wanted to install Clark as acting attorney general as part of his plan to overturn Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
ABC News, which reported earlier Thursday the activity at Clark’s Lorton, Virginia, home, cited a neighbor who said they saw FBI agents entering and exiting the residence.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., told NBC News that it “can confirm there was law enforcement activity in that area yesterday.” The spokesperson declined to provide further detail.
Spokespeople for the DOJ, FBI, and select committee did not immediately respond to CNBC’s requests for comment on the reported search.

In a pivotal Oval Office meeting on Jan. 3, 2021, Donoghue said he told Trump that Clark could never deliver on his promise to quickly uncover widespread fraud if he was put atop the DOJ in part because he was not “competent” enough.
“You’re talking about putting a man in that seat who has never tried a criminal case, who has never conducted a criminal investigation, and he’s telling you that he’s going to take charge of the department, 115,000 employees, including the entire FBI, and turn the place on a dime and conduct nationwide investigations that will produce results in a matter of days?” Donoghue asked.
“It’s impossible, it’s absurd, it’s not going to happen and it’s going to fail,” Donoghue said.
“It’s not going to happen. He’s not competent,” Donoghue added.

Gop Rep Kinzinger Details Death Threats Against Him And His Family
Rep. Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republicans on the select committee, said that threats and harassment targeted at him, his family and other members of the panel are “constant” and have been increasing.
Kinzinger on Sunday posted a screenshot on Twitter showing a handwritten death threat, which the congressman said was “Addressed to my wife, sent to my home, threatening the life of my family.”
“The Darkness is spreading courtesy of cowardly leaders fearful of truth,” Kinzinger tweeted.
Kinzinger told CNN on Wednesday that he received another message “last night, threatening execution,” saying that it now seems to be “the normal thing.”
The congressman’s participation in the Jan. 6 investigation and regular criticism of Trump have made him a pariah among many Republicans. He said he shared the death threat to point out the “depravity” swirling around the politically charged probe, decrying “that there are people that literally would come up with this idea of killing a five-month-old because you disagree with me being on the January 6 committee.”
“We have security, we’ve amped up our security posture,” Kinzinger said. “We’re going to move on, and it’s not going to hinder us and it’s not going to intimidate us.”

Trump Wanted Doj To ‘help Legitimize His Lies’ Thompson Says
Trump wanted the Department of Justice to actively aid in his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, Thompson said at the start of the hearing.
“Trump didn’t just want the Justice Department to investigate. He wanted the Justice Department to help legitimize his election lies. To baselessly call the election corrupt. To appoint a special counsel to investigate alleged election fraud. To send a letter to six state legislatures urging them to consider altering the election results,” Thompson said.
When these efforts failed, Trump sought to replace then-acting Attorney General Rosen with Clark, he said.

WASHINGTON On Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020, barely 24 hours after President Donald J. Trump claimed in the middle of the night that frankly, we did win this election, Jared Kushner woke up in his Kalorama mansion and announced to his wife that it was time to leave Washington. Were moving to Miami, he said.
The election had not even been called for Joseph R. Biden Jr., but as Mr. Kushner later told the story to aides and associates, the White Houses young power couple felt no need to wait for the official results. They saw which way the votes were going and understood that, barring some unforeseen surprise, the president had lost his bid for a second term. Even if he refused to accept it himself.
No matter how vociferously Mr. Trump claimed otherwise, neither Mr. Kushner nor Ivanka Trump believed then or later that the election had been stolen, according to people close to them. While the president spent the hours and days after the polls closed complaining about imagined fraud in battleground states and plotting a strategy to hold on to power, his daughter and son-in-law were already washing their hands of the Trump presidency.

Pence refused Trump’s last-ditch demands, which witnesses said sparked a mocking response from Trump.
The committee shared new photographs of Trump on that very phone call, which it obtained from the National Archives. Another exhibit showed a handwritten note on Trump’s schedule that the call was slated to take place at 11:20 a.m., just hours before a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol as Pence was presiding over Congress certifying Biden’s win.
“The conversation got pretty heated,” Ivanka Trump, the ex-president’s daughter who was in the room, told the committee in a videotaped deposition.
She recalled the phone call representing a “different tone” from what she’d previously heard her father use with Pence.
Other aides who were also inside the Oval Office echoed Ivanka Trump’s alarm.
Eric Herschmann, then was serving as the White House counsel, told lawmakers that the conversation started off with a “calmer tone” but “then it became heated.” Herschmann said he didn’t think many people were paying attention to the call until it became “louder.”
Nicholas Luna, Trump’s former assistant, told the committee he was delivering a note to the Oval Office when he overheard some of Trump’s side of the conversation.
“I remember hearing the word ‘wimp,'” Luna said in a taped deposition. “Either he called him a wimp, I don’t remember if he said, ‘You are a wimp, you’ll be a wimp.’ Wimp is the word I remember.”
“No staff went with him,” Jacob told the committee.
