President Joe Biden will address the nation and outline his new plan for combating COVID-19 tonight as America faces a surge in cases and hospitalizations due to the highly contagious delta variant.

Biden is expected to discuss pandemic responses in schools, especially as politicians in states like Arkansas, Florida, and Texas have attempted to ban mask and vaccine mandates for teachers and students. His plan will also likely address new plans to encourage Americans to get vaccinated, with Reuters reporting that he will require two-thirds of all U.S. employees to be vaccinated against the virus.

Heres everything you need to know to tune into Bidens speech this evening.

Is Trumps Coming To Michigan Controversial

It is. And heres why: Trumps endorsement of DePerno and Karamo comes ahead of an April 23 endorsement convention where the state Republican Party delegates will begin formally nominating candidates for down-ballot races, including attorney general and secretary of state. The nominees for other races, like governor or congressional seats, will be selected by the voters themselves during the Aug. 2 primary. And its not only Trump who has made endorsements, but also state party co-chair Meshawn Maddock, a staunch Trump supporter who is expected to be at the rally.

Taken together, that has quite a few Republicans either privately or publicly upset. Party leaders and officials typically dont make endorsements ahead of primaries or the partys selection, not wanting to make it seem as though they are trying to dictate an outcome. In the case of DePerno and Karamo, some Republicans are making the case that their pro-Trump stances are extreme to a point where more mainstream voters will reject them. That could keep the party from winning in what is otherwise expected to be a favorable year.

Trump To Reemerge At Cpac As Gop Tries To Plot Its Future

An annual gathering of conservatives this weekend in Florida is set to serve as the official reemergence of former President Donald Trump and an opportunity for lesser-known Republicans quietly plotting their futures in his long shadow to stand out.

Just 37 days into President Joe Bidens term, the Conservative Political Action Conference is also poised to serve as a testing ground for fresh attack lines as the White House and congressional Democrats prepare to pass trillion-dollar legislation designed to fight the pandemic, continue using executive authority to reverse Trump-era policies and install new senior government officials that Republicans hope to cast as ideological antagonists.

Theres no question that the gun has gone off on the 2024 campaign for the Republican nomination, said Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Conservative Union, which oversees CPAC.

But Mr. Trump and his future loom large over the confab.

The big question, said Schlapp, is does the former want to be the current again?

Aides to the former president didnt respond to requests for comment from CBS News. But based on his own conversations with the former president, Schlapp said Mr. Trump is still mulling what to do.

The conference promises to be an officially pro-Trump affair, if only because anti-Trump voices in the party are not allowed.

Yes, he should, McCarthy said.

When Is Donald Trump Speaking At Cpac

With the White House Press Room overtaken by the Biden administration and his Twitter account on lockdown, former President Donald Trump has been relatively quiet in the month since his departure from the Oval Office. That could change Sunday.

The 45th president is due to speak this weekend at the 2021 Conservative Political Action Conference, more commonly known as CPAC. The annual three-day summit of conservatism is already underway, but you have to scroll all the way to the end of the CPAC agenda to find Mr. Trump, who is set to close out the event with the final address. He is scheduled to take the stage at 3:40 p.m. Eastern Time on Sunday.

The conference marks the first significant gathering of Republicans since the election and its aftermath as the party reckons with the faction that continues to support Trump as its leader and those who think the GOP needs to move quickly beyond the turbulent era of his presidency. Conference organizers, representing the first camp, did not invite any of the 17 Republican members of Congress who voted to support Trumps second impeachment or any major Trump critics.

Trump is expected to use his speech to assert his standing as the head of the party, as well as to harshly criticize Bidens first month in office, including the new presidents efforts to undo Trumps immigration policies.

Rally Underscores Pennsylvanias Importance

President Address Tonight / Watch Biden S First Primetime Speech ...

The presence of both Trump and Biden in Pennsylvania within days of each other reinforces the political importance of the Keystone State.

Trumps rally on Saturday is being sandwiched by two visits from Biden. The president was in Philadelphia on Thursday for his speech about democracy, and he will travel Monday to Pittsburgh to mark Labor Day. Trump may also return to the state for another rally for Oz and Mastriano before Novembers elections.

Pennsylvania was pivotal in deciding the presidency in 2016 and 2020, it will be a potential turning point in control of the Senate in 2022 and it will likely be a fierce battleground in 2024.

Biden carried Pennsylvania by roughly 80,000 votes, but the state was a major target of attacks from Trump and his allies after it took days to finish counting votes and determine the winner.

Given the states rules about when it starts counting mail ballots and other forms of early voting, a close race could provide another opening for Trump and his supporters to levy baseless claims of fraud should his preferred candidates lose.

PHILADELPHIA Former President Donald Trump is singling out Pennsylvania for his first rally of the general election on Saturday, where two of his most besieged candidates in the country are threatening to tarnish his record as a kingmaker.

The fact that he has zeroed in on the swing state for the politically symbolic Labor Day weekend, the unofficial kickoff of the midterms, demonstrates how pivotal Pennsylvania is to his success this year and, more likely than not, a future presidential campaign.

Trumps visit to the state also signals that he has prioritized coming to the aid of Senate candidate Mehmet Oz and gubernatorial hopeful Doug Mastriano, who have lagged behind their Democratic opponents in polling and fundraising.

But President Joe Biden is campaigning in Pennsylvania during the long weekend, too, an acknowledgment that the races here are far from over.

Both of them appearing so soon around Labor Day not only says Pennsylvania is a battleground in 2022, but its a battleground in 2024, said Celinda Lake, a pollster for Bidens 2020 presidential campaign. Both of them want to run in an environment where their candidates have won in 2022.

Why Is Trump Back

President Donald Trump Delivers Remarks speech Upon Departure . #donaldtrump

His handlers say the rally is a continuation of President Trumps unprecedented effort to advance the MAGA agenda by energizing voters and highlighting America First candidates and causes. In Michigan, hes coming specifically to raise the profile of a couple of Republican candidates he has endorsed: Matthew DePerno, a lawyer who is running for the partys nomination for state attorney general, and Kristina Karamo, who is running for the nomination for secretary of state, the chief elections officer in Michigan.

Both candidates, by the way, have been strong supporters of Trumps unsupported claims that the 2020 election, including in Michigan, was corrupt and stolen from him.

Baseless Claims About The 2020 Outcome

Trumps trip to Iowa brings up another thing thats unprecedented: the false claims hes pushing about the 2020 election being stolen. There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud, but Iowans are asking about it at town halls.

At one last month for Grassley in rural western Iowa, a man in the back of the crowded room told the senator that he doesnt trust the outcome of the election.

I feel in my heart that there was a lot of cheating going on, the man said.

Grassley didnt directly correct the claim. Instead, he defended Iowas elections and criticized congressional Democrats plan for a federal voting overhaul.

Bardwell says misinformation has taken hold in the GOP.

You cant put the genie back in the bottle, in terms of once this accusation is unleashed, he said. And once its believed by a large percentage of the Republican base, theres kind of no going back at that point. Mainly because kind of the psychological dynamics of misinformation are such that at that point, people will just find and then rationalize the position that they already have.

Trumps lies about 2020 havent dissuaded Iowa Republicans from wanting to appear with him.

That includes Iowans who are up for reelection next year. Both Grassley and Gov. Kim Reynolds are slated to speak ahead of him at Saturday nights rally.

His Visit To Pennsylvania Is A Strategic Choice

Mr Trump’s name might not be on the ballot in Pennsylvania this year, but Trumpism certainly is.

He hand-picked the US Senate candidate, celebrity medical expert Dr Oz, and endorsed the far-right election conspiracy theorist Mr Mastriano for governor after his surprising primary win.

Should his candidates prevail, the Republican Party will see it as a sign of Mr Trump’s continued dominance of their base voters.

Should they lose, however, it could indicate to Mr Trump’s potential 2024 rivals that they may have a chance at the White House after all.

Rallygoers were far more enthused about Mr Mastriano – a candidate more closely forged in the former president’s mould – than they were about Dr Oz.

The crowd roared when Mr Mastriano was brought onstage. However Dr Oz was invited to join Mr Trump onstage well over an hour into the rally.

The celebrity doctor spoke for less than two minutes, and after his remarks, someone in the back of the crowd shouted “he’s a Rino!” or “Republican in name only”, a criticism that Dr Oz is not sufficiently conservative.

Fact Check: 20000 Migrant Children Brought Illegally Into The Us In December

How Trumpâs Promise To Reopen States For Business Defies The 10th Amendment

TRUMP CLAIM: Last month, 20,000 migrant children were illegally brought into the United States.

FACT CHECK: Probably True. According to CBP, 4,982 unaccompanied minors were apprehended at the border in October 2018, and November, 5,283 were caught. In addition, family units that is, individuals apprehended with a family member by the U.S. Border Patrol numbered 23,115 in October and 25,172 in November. Assuming that each family unit contains at least one child, that means that the numbers of children are well above the 20,000 number cited by the president tonight.

Pm: Arizona Connections To The Probe

As the Democratic-led House committee begins showing its evidence, there are several major Arizona-related matters to clarify.

What does the committee say about the roles of Arizona Republican Reps. Paul Gosar and Andy Biggs? The panel sought but failed to get Biggs testimony, but it didnt make a similar request of Gosar. That seems odd because they were both involved in many of the same activities that the committee indicated knowing more about.

Both, for example, attended a December 2020 strategy meeting at the White House and both pressed Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers, R-Mesa, to help in their effort to question or replace the states certified election results.

White House phone calls, baseless fraud: The origins of the Arizona election review

Another big question is what to make of the Trump electors who submitted paperwork claiming a Trump victory in Arizona. Were those participants trying to preserve legal arguments for Trump, or were they aware it could be used to justify setting aside election results?

There were at least some people tied to extremist groups from Arizona at the Capitol on Jan. 6, and some have already been charged or convicted. But will the committee make clear how the national network of extremists interacted with locals in Arizona?
