Days Until Biden’s Inauguration

Wednesday’s joint session of Congress will have procedural fireworks as 13 U.S. senators and more than 100 Republican House members plan to object to electoral votes from potentially six battleground states that Biden won.

But the efforts are doomed to fail, lacking the votes in the Democratic-controlled House and even in the Republican-led Senate. Because each objection could lead to hours of debate in the House and Senate, the session could be a marathon.

But in the end, Biden and Harris will be inaugurated as the next president and vice president at noon on Jan. 20.

Number Of Times The Us Supreme Court Sided Against Trump: 2

The U.S. Supreme Court twice refused to take up Trump-endorsed lawsuits that sought to overturn the results of the Nov. 3 election.

In a one-sentence denial, the Supreme Court on Dec. 8 rejected a request from Pennsylvania Republicans that sought to overturn Biden’s win in the state. The challenge, led Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., claimed that the Republican-led state legislature’s expansion of absentee voting violated the state’s constitution.

Three days later, the Supreme Court refused to let Texas challenge the election results in four battleground states critical to Trump’s defeat. The court said Texas did not demonstrate “a judicially cognizable interest in the manner in which another state conducts its elections.”

Massachusetts Primary Election Results

BOSTON Geoff Diehl, a former state representative endorsed by former President Donald Trump, has won the Republican nomination for Massachusetts governor over businessman Chris Doughty, who was considered the more moderate candidate in the race.

The victory for Diehl sets up a general election contest against Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey, who would be the first openly gay person and the first woman elected governor if she wins in November. The states current governor, Republican Charlie Baker, decided against seeking a third term.

Republican voters made Massachusetts the latest blue state this midterm season to nominate a Trump loyalist in a high-profile race, potentially dooming the partys chances of winning in November. Voters in Connecticut and Maryland, liberal states where centrist Republicans have found some success in previous elections, also selected far-right candidates to go up against a Democrat in the general election.

Healey, whose only rival for the nomination dropped out of the race but remained on the ballot, will be the heavy favorite in November against Diehl in one of the most liberal states in the nation.

Doughty said he supported some of Trumps initiatives but wanted to focus on challenges facing Massachusetts, which he said is increasingly unaffordable.

Pressure On State And Local Officials

As the Trump campaign’s lawsuits were repeatedly rejected in court, Trump personally communicated with Republican local and state officials in at least three states, including state legislators, attorneys general, and governors who had supported him in the general election and continued to support him. He pressured them to overturn the election results in their states by recounting votes, throwing out certain votes, or getting the state legislature to replace the elected Democratic slate of Electoral College members with a Republican slate of electors chosen by the legislature. In late November, he personally phoned Republican members of two county electoral boards in Michigan, trying to get them to reverse their certification of the result in their county. He then invited members of the Michigan state legislature to the White House, where they declined his suggestion that they choose a new slate of electors. He repeatedly spoke to the Republican governor of Georgia and the secretary of state, demanding that they reverse their state’s election results, threatening them with political retaliation when they did not, strongly criticizing them in speeches and tweets, and demanding that the governor resign.

Although Donald Trump refuses to concede, the 2020 Presidential Election has been called for Joe Biden, after the Associated Press on Saturday declared the Democratic challenger the winner in Pennsylvania, whose 20 electoral votes took him over the threshold of 270 needed for victory.

Number Of Contested States: 6

The vast majority of the lawsuits were in six pivotal battleground states that Biden won: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Trump won five of the states four years ago in his victory over Hillary Clinton, but Biden flipped each to the Democratic column.

House Republicans who plan to object to Electoral College results Wednesday said they plan to target these same six states.

Voting Patterns In The 2020 Election

The 2020 election featured continuity in the voting patterns of major demographic and political groups in the population, but there were a few important shifts. The gender gap in the 2020 election was narrower than it had been in 2016 as Democrats made gains among men and Republicans made gains among women. In the 2016 election, Donald Trump won men by 11 percentage points while Hillary Clinton won women by 15 points . In the 2018 election, Democrats substantially narrowed the gap with men while maintaining an 18-point lead among women. In the 2020 election, men again divided nearly evenly , while Bidens advantage narrowed to 11 points among women .

Similarly, as Biden increased his level of support among White men in the 2020 election relative to Clintons in 2016, Trump gained among White women, which had the effect of further narrowing the gender gap among White voters. In 2016, Trump won White men by 30 points . That gap narrowed to a 17-point margin for Trump in 2020 . White women, a group sometimes categorized as swing voters and who broke nearly evenly in 2016 , favored him in 2020 .

Biden received the support of 92% of Black voters, nearly the same as Clinton received in 2016 and Democratic candidates for the U.S. House received in 2018.

Number Of Electoral Votes Changed As The Result Of Trump’s Effort: 0

Despite all the lawsuits, recounts and false voter fraud allegations, the Electoral College on Dec. 14 elected Biden the next president by a margin of 306 to 232 marking no change in the electoral outcome.

Biden finished with a record 81,281,502 votes nationally, defeating Trump in the popular vote by a sizable 7 million votes.

With 51.3% of the national popular vote, Biden won with the highest share of the vote for a challenger of an incumbent president since Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932. Trump won 46.8% of the vote nationally.

Two Wins And A Loss In North Carolina

Representative Ted Budd won the Republican nomination for Senate, and Bo Hines, a 26-year-old political novice who enthralled Mr. Trump, was catapulted to victory in his primary for a House seat outside Raleigh.

But Representative Madison Cawthorn crumbled under the weight of repeated scandals and blunders. He was ousted in his primary, a rejection of a Trump-endorsed candidate. Voters chose Chuck Edwards, a state senator.

Table Of Excess Votes Is ‘meaningless’

The Gateway Pundit billed Keshel as an “elections data expert” whose “investigation” came up with a conservative estimate of voter fraud in 2020. But there’s no evidence his Telegram post is based in fact.

“Its not clear precisely what Keshel has done to create this ‘trend analysis,'” Charles Stewart, a political science professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said in an email. “So as far as I can tell, hes just pulling numbers out of the air.”

In a Facebook message to USA TODAY, Keshel declined to provide additional evidence to support his claims.

“If I sent everyone information, I’d get nothing done,” he said.

In its fact check debunking Keshel’s claims, the Associated Press wrote that Keshel identified himself on LinkedIn as a technology company sales manager and former baseball analyst. His profile, which USA TODAY could not find online, did not mention election experience, according to the AP.

Without seeing Keshel’s sources and methods, election experts told USA TODAY it’s impossible to verify his table.

“If I infer hes comparing Bidens numbers to Trumps, and Trumps 2020 numbers to 2016, then we need to see the full model hes using,” Stewart said. “A rigorous statistical model would have explicit measures, reported parameters, and confidence intervals, none of which I see here.”

Modeling aside, Keshel’s claims aren’t supported by vote totals from the election. Biden won each of the states Keshel says he lost.

Election Deniers Who Say Trump Won In 2020 Now Running For Attorney General In Key States

Part of what made the bureau suspicious, as detailed in its report, was some petition sheets not showing evidence of normal wear that would be found if a person carries a petition around for hours or even days to gather signatures. It also said some petitions appeared to be round-tabled, meaning people took turns signing lines on the petitions in an attempt to make the signatures appear authentic. Plus, it said it found the petitions included fake signatures of many dead voters. Looks like Trump was right again, this time about dead people getting involved in elections.

Election experts, including two at the University of Michigan, have explained that in the past, campaigns relied on volunteers to gather signatures. In recent years, however, more campaigns have hired commercial firms that pay people by the signatures they collect, work often done with little supervision. Still, in most cases, valid petitions are submitted. That wasnt the case this time.

Why didnt the campaigns double check the petitions before submitting them to the state?

In response to the news that he may be dumped from the ballot, Johnson made a statement that implied he was taken advantage of by criminals. Another Republican of the five identified by the bureau, Michigan State Police Capt. Michael Brown, dropped out of the race, saying he cannot and will not be associated with this activity.

No Evidence Of Widespread Fraud

Desipite Keshel’s claim that there were millions of excess votes counted for Biden, there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud affecting the outcome of the 2020 election.

For there to be voter fraud on the scale that Keshel claims 8.1 million excess votes for Biden it stands to reason that Democrats would have performed well in other races, too. But they didn’t.

“Biden won the national popular vote by a margin that is not surprising or out of line with other recent elections,” Burden said. “Republicans did quite well in other races, making gains in the House of Representatives, governorships and state legislatures.”

Officials from both parties at every level of government have repeatedly refuted claims of widespread voter fraud affecting the 2020 election results.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and its partners said the election was the “most secure in American history.” Former Attorney General William Barr repeatedly dismissed claims of fraud from Trump and others, saying there was no evidence to support them. Several hand recounts and audits in battleground states across the countryreaffirmed Biden’s victory. And dozens of lawsuits filed by Trump and his allies to overturn the election results failed.

“There is no convincing evidence that fraud produced a substantial number of invalid votes for any candidate in 2020,” Burden said.

Claim: Trump Suggests He’ll Go Directly To The Supreme Court To ‘stop’ Counting

“So we’ll be going to the U.S. Supreme Court. We want all voting to stop. We don’t want them to find any ballots at 4:00 in the morning and add them to the list, OK?”

This is misleading. The president cannot directly appeal to the Supreme Court for relief litigation will need to be move through the federal court system before it can be appealed to the nations highest court.

Voting has finished, as well, and theres no evidence that votes will be added, as Trump claims. Eligible ballots, meanwhile, will be counted.

What Are The Tasks At Hand

The Claim: More Than 8 Million Excess Votes For Joe Biden Were Counted During The 2020 Election

Conspiracy theorists who, months after the 2020 election, still falsely claim voter fraud affected the outcome have started to get creative.

How creative? One retired Army captain created a color-coded map that purportedly shows where there was rampant fraud during the election.

“Elections Expert Seth Keshel Releases National Fraud Numbers: Finds 8.1 Million Excess Votes in US Election, Affirms Trump Won PA, MI, WI, NV, AZ, GA and MN,” reads the headline of an Aug. 2 article from the Gateway Pundit, a conservative website that has repeatedly publishedfalse claims about voter fraud.

The article, which accumulated nearly 13,000 shares within four days, cites an Aug. 2 post from Keshel on Telegram, an encrypted messaging app popular with far-right extremists.

The post includes a table that purportedly shows the number of “excess Biden votes” in all 50 states. Based on a “trend analysis of population growth, voter behavior and party registration,” Keshel concluded that more than 8.1 million excess votes for President Joe Biden were counted in the election.

“Trump won: PA, MI, WI, NV, AZ, GA, MN,” Keshel wrote in the post, which was viewed more than 170,000 times within five days. Former President Donald Trump in an Aug. 3 statement.

But Trump didn’t win any of the states Keshel said he did.

Why Are Swing States Important

While 38 out of the 50 states in the US voted for the same partys candidate in the five presidential ballots before this year’s, the result in other states can go either way from one election to the next, and is likely to be decided by fine margins.

This makes such states, known as swing or battleground states, crucial to the overall outcome of the election. Why? Well, it chiefly comes down to the system used to decide the winner of a US general election.

This is because a candidate does not necessarily have to win the popular vote to win the race for the White House indeed, Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in 2016 despite receiving nearly three million votes fewer. What really matters is how many votes the candidates get from what is known as the US electoral college.

Each state has a certain number of electoral-college votes – depending on its number of representatives in Congress – which are awarded to the victor of the popular vote in that state. With 29, Florida has the most electoral-college votes of all the swing states, followed by Pennsylvania with 20 and Ohio with 18.

And with the exception of Maine and Nebraska, a state’s electoral college distributes its votes on a winner-takes-all basis.

To be elected as US president, a contender needs to get 270 votes from the electoral college.
